Her father is from a Jewish family and her mother converted to Judaism. Her parents separated when she was eleven, sending her off to the local amateur dramatics society to keep her occupied at the time. She won the lead but at Dartford Grammar School for Girls she was more interested in sport until she joined the National Youth Music Theatre (from 1994 and 1998) as well as The Liz Burville Dance Centre, Bexley. In 1997, By the time she was 16, she had toured to the Far East and Broadway and was weighing up drama schools. Going to West End shows as often as her mother could afford it, she would comb the programmes, tallying up who trained where. She began studying at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts, graduating in 2000 with a BA(Hons) in Theatre. |
Upon leaving college, Lara embarked on a decade of musicals including, Miss Saigon, High Society, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Grease and The Wizard of Oz. Her extensive theatre career led her to gain a Laurence Olivier Award nomination in 2008 for her portrayal of Lucille Frank in Rob Ashford's production of Parade at The Donmar Warehouse. She was invited to re-create the role at The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, gaining much critical praise.
Lara made her screen debut in 2008, in the BBC prime-time show, Robin Hood (2006), playing Isabella of Gisbourne. In 2010, she joined the cast of the third series of HBO's True Blood as Claudine Crane. She played Erin Watts, the new Chief of Section D, in the tenth and final series of Spooks and in 2001, played Irene Adler in the BBC’s new adaptation of Sherlock. This role caused controversy by being shown in the nude (albeit with full nudity obscured by camera angles) before the 9pm watershed.
In 2012, after a guest role in Skins, Lara joined the cast of Da Vinci's Demons as the seductive and politically-minded Clarice Orsini, a series regular and wife of Lorenzo Medici. She has also appeared in several films including, Language of a Broken Heart, The Special Relationship (TV movie) and Legacy: Black Ops.
She married American actor Josh Dallas over Christmas 2007 in a 16th century barn in Devon. The couple honeymooned in the Maldives. They divorced in 2011, with Josh confirming their divorce in an interview on Bob Rivers' radio show.
Lara is currently dating former Spooks star Raza Jaffrey. They were friends in LA for three years before she asked him out. Having just divorced another Spook, Miranda Raison, he told her politely that he didn't date actresses but in2012 that went out of the window. The couple now live together in Los Angeles.

We're a very normal couple but there's an element of our job that involves a bit of sparkle and glamour, but we're also paying our electricity bill and doing the food shop.
