Series 5
The fifth series of Spooks originally aired on BBC Once from 17th September 2006 to 13th November 2006. It comprised 10 episodes.
Episode 1: Gas and Oil (Part 1)
Air date: 17th September 2006
Synopsis: After the shooting, Angela Wells jumps off the roof and kills herself. While Adam recovers, a gas and oil depot is attacked, followed by assassinations of some members of parliament. At first, MI5 suspect Al-Qaeda, but they discover that a group of influential businessmen, politicians and members of MI6 led by Jocelyn Myers are responsible, in an attempt to take control of Britain. Jo is tasked with protecting the Prime Minister's son, Euan after threats to his life. Meanwhile, the conspirators plan another attack; take over air traffic control and cause an mid-air collision over the heart of London. When he inadvertently stumbles upon the plan, Colin is murdered. Jocelyn's daughter, Ros warns Juliet, Adam and Harry that their cars are rigged with bombs.
Episode 2: Gas and Oil (Part 2)
Air date: 18th September 2006
Synopsis: While Zaf is able to prevent the mid-air plane collision, the car bombs leave Juliet paralysed from the waist down. The conspirators manage to coax the PM to give in to their plan, including detaining citizens without trial, and to have armed police officers shoot people attending a protest to oppose their new plans. Harry is arrested and sent to a detention facility by the new rules, in order to prevent him from stopping them. However, the rest of the team are able to convince Ros that her father is the ringleader, and they force him to surrender. They are informed of Harry's location, and manages to stop Michael Collingwood from setting fire to the entire detention, by activating the sprinkler system beforehand. At the end of the episode Adam offers Ros a position on the Grid.
Episode 3: The Cell
Air date: 25th September 2006
Synopsis: Zaf goes undercover to infiltrate an Al-Qaeda cell, who are preparing to attack London with a thermobaric bomb. Ros also tasks Zaf to try and turn one of the members, who broke up with his girlfriend after converting to Islam. By the time the weapon arrives in England, Zaf is able to commandeer the weapon, but Adam discovers that someone is planning to detonate the bomb remotely. They track the vehicle and armed units are able to take the bomber down. Meanwhile, Harry asks Ruth to dinner, an enjoyable evening for them both, but when Ruth realises some of their colleagues know and are gossiping about them behind their back, she tells Harry she can’t see him anymore.
Episode 4: World Trade
Air date: 2nd October 2006
Synopsis: Section D are tasked to ensure a successful "Addressing Africa" summit to end poverty in the country. But Adam and the team soon uncover a plot to assassinate one of the delegates, President Sekoa. After they successfully capture the would-be assassin, Adam and the team find evidence that the president is planning to buy weapons of mass destruction to commit a genocide against his own people. After the deal has been signed, Adam releases the assassin, making it look like she escaped, allowing her to successfully assassinate the president. However, Adam is unable to convince the President's security to hand her over to police custody and she is killed. During the summit Harry discovers that Ros's father will not have his sentence commuted for his attempted coup, but he keeps this information from her until after the operation ends, to ensure her concentration. Ros makes it perfectly clear that she not happy that he is interfering in her personal life.
Episode 5: The Message

Synopsis: Ruth witnesses the suicide of Head of Security for Cotterdam Prison at her local tube station. The prison went through a fire several months earlier, which killed seven terrorist suspects and the enquiry report is to be published that day. Moments before his suicide, Ruth is convinced he tried to give her a coded message and becomes obsessed with finding out what it is. Soon Ruth is framed for the guard's death; CCTV footage of the suicide has been tampered with to show her pushing him off the platform. It is eventually revealed that Oliver Mace faked the terrorists' deaths, and sent them to Egypt to be tortured. Harry takes the rap for Ruth, saying she was just following orders and he attacks Mace, slashing his arm with a broken glass. Not wanting Harry to sacrifice himself or his career, Ruth incriminates herself, working with the team to have Harry released and faking her own death. The team use the evidence to force Mace to resign. Harry meets Ruth for a emotional farewell. He is about to reveal his love for her, but she urges him to leave it as ‘something wonderful that was never said’. After telling him not to get shot, Ruth kisses him and the pair enjoy a final embrace before Ruth boards a barge that will take her out of the country. Harry looks on sadly as the boat sails away.
Episode 6: Hostage Takers (Part 1)
Air date: 16th October 2005
Synopsis: After a group of terrorists smuggle themselves into England, MI5 know a series of suicide attacks will happen during talks for the government to sell nuclear power to Saudi Arabia. During the operation to stop the attacks, Ros goes undercover to join the Saudi Arabian royal family. Meanwhile, Adam starts an affair with Wes' babysitter after she wakes him from a nightmare about losing Wes. One of the new members of Section D is a mole to the terrorists, who are using the suicide bombers as a distraction. Zaf and Adam stop a suicide bomber, only to find the "bomb" is just putty. At the same time, gunmen attack the Saudi Trade Centre, and tie up the hostages, including Ros who is present. Meanwhile Ruth's replacement, Sally, starts but she doesn't last long; she is stabbed by the mole.
Episode 7: Hostage Takers (Part 2)
Air date: 23rd October 2006
Synopsis: The gunmen demand the release of al-Qaeda prisoners, or they'd execute a hostage every hour. Sally is discovered dead at her home, and when it's revealed that watchlist information had been copied from her computer to a USB drive, the team presume that she was the mole. However, Jo persists with the investigation, and discovers that it was actually the heavily pro-Israeli member of the team, Neil (who had lost his Israeli wife in a suicide bombing in Israel) who leaked the information and killed Sally. When he’s caught, he commits suicide so as not to divulge any information. Eventually, MI5 discover that the hostage situation is not al-Qaeda's style. It is revealed that the hostage takers are in fact Mossad agents, who are trying to stop the nuclear deal. After Ros provides some needed intel, SAS is able to storm the Trade Centre and kill all but one of the gunmen; Adam subdues the leader, where he is handed to the Americans.
Episode 8: Agenda
Air date: 30th October 2006
Synopsis: Two fundamentalist Islamic clerics are murdered by the "Sons of Phinehas", a radical Christian group led by Steven Paynton. Adam goes undercover as a prospective investor to uncover the identities of his "soldiers". Wes runs away due to his father not being with him. This causes him to have a panic attack. Furthermore, the Mossad have interests in Paignton's operation and has sent a kill squad. After they kill Paignton, Harry talks the Mossad leader to back down before the squad corners Adam. Wes is found by the end of the episode.
Episode 9: The Criminal
Air date: 6th November 2006
Synopsis: MI5 are assigned to protect Niko Grecic, a Serbian war criminal who is testifying against his former commander at the Hague, whom they believe is targeted by Richard Dempsey, a former MI6 officer who defected to Serbia, and betrayed his old friend, Adam. Dempsey contacts Adam and wants his help clearing his name, as Harry orders Jo and Zaf to kill him. Adam and Dempsey are able to prove he has no intention to kill Grecic. However, six months later in Rio de Janeiro, Dempsey assassinates Grecic.
Episode 10: Aftermath
Air date: 13th November 2005
Synopsis: When a North Sea tidal surge threatens to flood London, an eco-terror group, Divine Earth take control of the Thames Barrier, rig it with explosives and threaten to blow it unless the government publishes a report, "Aftermath", which states that the government will build an economic and military strength so that Britain and America can control the remaining resources from global warming. Meanwhile, Harry learns that Adam is growing suicidal, and has gone into a complete breakdown during the operation. To prevent the group from destroying the barrier, MI5 must flood a section of the barrier to counter the threat. However, Adam and Ros are in those sections. After stopping Divine Earth, the two narrowly escape drowning.
