Series 2
The second series of Spooks originally aired on BBC Once from 2nd June 2003 to 11th August 2003. It comprised 10 episodes.
Episode 1: Legitimate Targets
Air date: 2nd June 2003
Synopsis: The bomb in Tom's house fails to detonate, but another bomb goes off killing the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Patrick McCann wishes to defect, but is killed before MI5 can get to him. Soon, a top secret military base near Longcross is also bombed. The team soon find out it was the work of Serbian general Gradic, who stole some munitions from Longcross. Zoe goes undercover to befriend a Serbian intelligence agent, who is Gradic's sympathiser and nephew, and uncover the next target. Malcolm Wynn-Jones decodes the next target; the COBRA meeting Harry is attending. Fortunately, they are able to stop the attack and arrest Gradic. By the end of the episode, Ellie leaves Tom, unable to cope with the reality of his life as a MI5 officer.
Episode 2: Nest of Angels
Air date: 9th June 2003
Synopsis: Mohammed Rachid, an Afghan mullah of a Birmingham mosque, is believed to be cultivating a group of young suicide bombers. MI5’s asset, Johnny, is discovered and tortured before being thrown out of the mosque. They need another undercover asset, but there’s no one of a suitable ethnic background. Section D gets a new team member, analyst Ruth Evershed, on secondment from GCHQ. She discovers that Algerian agent Muhammed Ibhn Khaldun has smuggled himself into the UK. He offers to help MI5 infiltrate the cell. This action attracts attention of the CIA, who also wish to use Khaldun. The episode comes to its conclusion with a 16 year-old boy blowing himself up, but Khaldun sacrifices himself to prevent any nearby casualties.
Episode 3: Spiders
Air date: 16th June 2003
Synopsis: Zoe goes undercover as a school teacher to gather information on Gordon Blaney, who MI5 believes has attempted to hack into MI5's database and bring them down. It is later revealed that Blaney was framed. The real hacker occupies Section D with a threat against the school as a diversion to gather access codes to MI5's inner sanctum. It is revealed the hacker is Noah Gleeson, one of the pupils at the school, whose father, an MI5 officer, was killed on an operation in Greece. Zoe and Tom are able to stop Noah from bringing down MI5, he is then sent to a psychiatric hospital.
Episode 4: Blood and Money
Air date: 23rd June 2003
Synopsis: Victor Shvitkoy of the Russian Mafia has stolen $20billion of aid money, and has London stock trader John Lightwood, launder the first $1bn to the UK. After Lightwood is found murdered, Danny goes undercover as a stock trader to find the money. He soon locates the other $19bn, but also learns that fellow stock trader, Maxim, is Shvitkoy's daughter; MI5 apprehend Shvitkoy. Meanwhile, Zoe learns the man she is having an affair with is married. Tom discovers that Ruth has been spying on them, acting as a mole on orders from GCHQ, but he turns her, giving her a second chance with MI5.
Episode 5: I Spy Apocolypse
Air date: 7th July 2003
Synopsis: Section D participates in an EERIE exercise where a "dirty bomb" goes off in London. However, evidence dictates the threat as real; that deadly VX nerve gas attack has been released in Parliament Square. The Grid runs out of power and is sealed off to prevent any leakage of the gas. While the team attempts to contact the outside world, many of them start exhibiting signs of cabin fever, and after learning Harry is infected, some of the team believe the gas has leaked itself into the Grid and attempt to leave. In the end, it turns out that the entire threat was in fact a drill, even Harry’s “infection” and Tom receives top marks for his leadership skills. At the end of the episode Tom breaks up with his troublesome girlfriend, Vicky Westbrook.
Episode 6: Without Incident
Air date: 14th July 2003
Synopsis: When US President George W Bush makes an unannounced visit to the UK for several hours, Tom liaises with Christine Dale of the CIA, to ensure his visit goes without incident. They are able to identify the threats and ensures that the mission was successful. Meanwhile, Tom gets trouble from his ex, Vicky, who post cards advertising as services as a male hooker, complete with his name, photo and contact details, all around London. Sam traipses round Soho collecting them all and Christine takes matters into her own hands and makes Vicky stop the harassment. In the end, Tom starts having an affair with Christine. In the midst of this crisis, in-house physiologist Miranda Saunders conducts interviews with various members of the team, resulting in an air of paranoia on The Grid.
Episode 7: Clean Skin
Air date: 21st July 2003
Synopsis: A 14 year old boy, JJ, breaks into Harry’s house and steals a briefcase containing files containing codes for "Firestorm", a specialist electromagnetic pulse weapon developed by a French scientist. Harr and Tom find the boy, and after realising he has a photographic memory and has the "Firestorm" codes in his head, Tom believes they have found the ‘clean skin’ they need to break into a building and steal "Firestorm" before it can be sold to the Chinese. JJ reluctantly agrees and succeeds, but refuses Tom’s offer to join MI5.
Episode 8: Strike Force
Air date: 28th July 2003
Synopsis: Decorated British Army Major, Samuel Curtis, is believed to be plotting a mutiny. Tom is assigned to go undercover in his unit as an Army officer to uncover the plot, but finds nothing. However, they soon discover that Curtis and his men have hijacked a convoy of radioactive waste. Curtis demands that improvements be made to the military, or he'll blow up the waste. As Tom gets Curtis to stand down, Harry orders a sniper to kill him. This action angers Tom, who starts showing signs that the job is getting to him. At his surprise birthday party Harry discovers Tom and Christine’s affair and order s Tom to end it. Meanwhile, Ruth’s secondment is coming to an end, but her work impresses Harry and he decides to keep her with MI5.
Episode 9: The Seventh Division
Air date: 4th August 2003
Synopsis: The Chala Cartel, a Columbian criminal organization dealing with drugs and weapons, is the current target of the team at MI5. While attempting to enter British soil, the Chala Cartel kill 8 customs and excise officers. The leader, Rafael Morrientes is involved in a deal with the owner of a major UK oil company, Ross Vaughan; he’ll provide protection for Vaughan’s oil pipeline project in his home country. In an attempt to get to infiltrate the Cartel, Tom and Zoe befriend the girlfriend of the leader, Mariela Hernandez. Meanwhile, Tessa is back and she’s recruited to Sam to unwittingly spy on Harry and the team and pass her information. She uses this information to get back at Harry, informing Vaughan that Mariela is assisting MI5. Vaughan tells Morrientes, who then kills Mariela.
Episode 10: Smoke and Mirrors

Synopsis: Christine Dale tells Tom that an American assassin is plotting to kill a member of the British government. He enlists Danny and Zoe for help in an unauthorised operation. During the investigation, Danny sees evidence that Tom may be a traitor. After being confronted by Harry, Tom says he's been framed by Herman Joyce. Joyce is a former CIA agent who blames Tom for what happened to his daughter Lisa. They put Tom's fingerprints on a sniper rifle to murder the Chief of the Defence Staff. However, MI5 now believe Tom is guilty; as Joyce died five years previously in a car accident. Realising he is trapped, Tom shoots Harry, and disappears into the North Sea.
