She is the flatmate of fellow officer Danny Hunter. In the second episode, the team are investigating Robert Osborne, who they believe to be inciting race riots. Tom is supposed to go undercover with Zoe but she is called away to work on another assignment, so Helen is asked to take her place. She is eager to participate in the operation, wanting to move through the ranks as quickly as possible. |
She and Tom pose as man and wife to win over Osborne’s wife. They succeed but Osborne discovers their true identities. To try and force Tom to talk, Osborne tortures Helen by dipping her hand in a deep fat fryer. Tom doesn’t give in, so Osborne dips her head in as well; burning her face off. Upon removing her from the fryer, Osborne has his henchman kill her with a shot to the back of the head.
The entire team is devastated by Helen's death; so Harry arranges for Osborne to be killed by Special Branch.
After her final episode was broadcast, Helen's death scenes attracted over 250 complaints, 154 of them to the television watchdog, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, the highest number of complaints for a television programme in 2002. In a January 2010 poll, fans of the show voted Helen's death as the "most shocking death scene" in the series, drawing 49% of the votes.
