Danny Hunter
Date of Birth: 19.07.1976
First episode: Series 1, Episode 1 Last episode: Series 3, Episode 10 Job: Junior Case Officer Status: Deceased (shot) Portrayed by: David Oyelowo Born and raised in London, to a single mother, Danny is an only child. He dropped out of university after studying Chemistry for two years to play cricket for Surrey. This didn’t turn out quite as planned, he rarely made the team so he left and applied to MI5, joining Section D in 2000. Danny is young, sharp and there's no doubt that he is good at his job, but sometimes he is a little over anxious to prove it. He doesn’t fail to notice the glamour and excitement of being part of MI5, and sometimes lets it go to his head. |
He has expensive taste and is chewed out by Harry after it is discovered that he has been using MI5 resources to increase his credit limit. Nevertheless he is able to make good decisions in high-pressure environments and no-one can touch him for surveillance skills.
Danny shares his luxury flat with colleague Helen Flynn until she is killed. Soon thereafter fellow junior officer Zoe becomes his new flatmate. She and Danny work well together and develop a strong friendship. Danny's confidence takes a serious knock when colleague Tom is de-commissioned from the service and Zoe, whom he has developed deep feelings for, is forced into exile in Chile after an operation went wrong.
In the finale episode of series 3 Danny and colleague Fiona are captured by Iraqi terrorists. They attempt to escape, killing one of their captors, and the leader declares that as retribution one of them must die. The terrorist gives Adam 30 seconds in which to decide which one of them should be killed. After murmuring a silent prayer, Danny deliberately provokes the terrorist in a moving final speech, mocking him for losing his humanity and sense of pity, and finally cursing him, saying "Fuck you, you death-worshipping fascist!" The infuriated terrorist promptly shoots him in the head. Danny has sacrificed himself to save Fiona and spare his colleague Adam from being forced to make the awful choice.
In the last scene in the episode fellow MI5 officer Ruth cradles Danny's head in grief. The first episode in the next season sees the cast attending Danny's funeral, but an explosion in London forces them to leave. Ruth, who had formed a strong friendship with Danny, is particularly reluctant to do so, but in the end is persuaded by Harry.
A postcard from the exiled Zoe, expressing her feelings for Danny, arrives ten days after he is killed, so he never knows the depth of Zoe's affections. The postcard is instead re-routed to Danny's mother, and is subsequently intercepted by Special Branch and referred to MI5. The postcard, with certain details redacted, is added to Zoe's closed file, as her identity and whereabouts must still be protected. Harry notes the fact that Danny never knew the depth of Zoe's affections as a sad reminder of the price MI5 officers are required to suffer.
