First episode: Series 7, Episode 1 Last episode: Series 9, Episode 8 Job: Section Chief Status: Deceased (suicide) Portrayed by: Richard Armitage Lucas first appears in the first episode of series 7. He’s a former Section Chief (prior to the show's start) who has been imprisoned and tortured in Russia for eight years after being betrayed and having his cover blown by Connie. (Although this is not known at the time of his first appearance.) Harry manages to secure his release from prison and re-instates him to Section D. His loyalty is initially called into question and he has to prove himself to the rest of the team; which he does. |
Lucas is a person divided between who he was prior to his incarceration and who he has become since. He was once the best in his field, and now he is trying to regain his former brilliance. He has no knowledge of how damaged he is emotionally, until memories start to work their way to the surface. He struggles to re-adjust to the real world; finding even the simplest things difficult. For example, he can’t get used to sleeping in a bed; choosing instead to lie on the floor.
He is instrumental in several major operations, including the unmasking of Connie as the ‘Sugarhorse’ mole. He also comes across one of his interrogators from Russia, Oleg Darshavin, and the Stockholm Syndrome he had developed in Russia returns, putting the operation in peril. In the end though, Lucas is able to capture Darsharvin and foil the plot. Lucas also becomes involved with CIA liaison officer Sarah Caulfield. The initial power struggle between them ends up in a "torrid love affair," which is monitored by the team.
After Ros’ death, Lucas is once again promoted to Section Chief but as the series develops it becomes apparent that Lucas isn’t all that he seems. A mysterious figure from Lucas' past, Vaughn Edwards, returns and blackmails him into giving him a secret file called Albany, which is the blueprint for a genetic weapon). His appearance brings back a lot of memories for Lucas, reigniting his feelings for his ex- Maya Lahan. He visits her and they re-kindle their relationship. Lucas visits Malcolm, who is now retired, to retrieve the Albany file. However it isn’t actually the file; just information that leads to its location. Feeling double crossed, he returns to Malcolm’s house to confront him but he finds it deserted; Malcolm has cleared out.
Lucas eventually kills Vaughn but not before it is revealed that his real name is John Bateman. Bateman was involved in a bombing in Dakar in the 90s and killed the real Lucas North. Bateman then assumed his identity and came to work for MI5 in North's place (as Lucas had already passed the first round of security checks). With Vaughn dead, 'Lucas' continues to seek Albany to cut a deal with the Chinese, so that he can leave the country with his girlfriend Maya. He kidnaps Ruth and uses her as leverage against Harry; if he doesn’t hand over the file, he will kill Ruth. Harry gives him the file and manages to save Ruth.
The team try to stop ‘Lucas’ and Maya and during a stand-off between them and other members of the grid, Maya is shot and killed. With nothing left to lose, ‘Lucas’ coaxes Harry onto a London roof to kill him, but after it is revealed that Albany is a fake; the blueprint doesn’t work, he throws himself off the roof instead.
