His father was a clergyman and his mother a house wife. He is an only child. He attended St John’s College Cambridge where he achieved a First in Natural Sciences. He took a gap year after university, spending a year in Italy visiting museums and working on various archaeological digs. He speaks Russian, Arabic, Chinese and German fluently. He joined MI5 in 1990 after an early career in the Home Office and a 5 year stint in the private sector. He didn't particularly enjoy his time with WhizzFixx media, but as a co-founder it made him quite rich. This background makes Malcolm perfectly placed to head up the technical section, providing valuable background support on all major operations. |
Malcolm could have been born to be a spook. He's very much a back room boy, and you're not likely to see him out risking life and limb on the front-line, but that's not to say he isn't vital to the smooth running of the operations. Malcolm's mind works at the speed at light, making connections and deductions that can make the difference between life and death to the spooks in the field.
While some of the rest of the team might tend to take all the glory, they can usually owe their success to a piece of Malcolm's expert knowledge. But he's not the kind of guy to make a fuss. He doesn't relish the limelight and when the job's done, he's more likely to bury his head in a cryptic crossword than start shouting about his success.
Malcolm is hit hard when his colleague and close friend Colin is murdered, followed shortly after by the departure of Ruth, but he continues with his work. He and Harry have a strong friendship; due to the length of time they have worked together and their shared belief in protecting the country. There are no women in Malcolm's life and his sexuality, though never directly mentioned, is sometimes questioned by viewers.
Malcolm retires at the end of series 8, episode 1, after helping save Ruth’s step-son Nico, believing himself too old to continue. Harry grudgingly agrees and Malcolm leaves the Grid. He makes a brief return in Series 9 after Lucas North contacts him regarding the whereabouts of the Albany file. Malcolm gives him a fake, and later reports him to Harry. Upon learning that he’d been double crossed, Lucas storms his house intending to kill him but the house is empty. Malcolm, his mother and all their belongings have gone.
