First episode: Series 6, Episode 5 Last episode: Series 7, Episode 7 Job: Junior Case Officer Status: Deceased (garrotted) Portrayed by: Alex Lanipekun Ben Kaplan is an aspiring freelance journalist who has a brief fling with Jo Portman and ultimately gets wrapped up in Section D's affairs after sleeping with her. His motivations were to expose what was going on with MI5 and Section D's activities in stopping terrorism. Shortly after, during a hostage crisis where three important diplomats are held hostage, along with their audience, Ben helps Adam Carter and Ros Myers free the hostages. Ben is offered a position on the team by Adam, but refuses. |
Later, following the death of Zafar Younis, Harry Pearce successfully recruited Ben after discovering he is extremely resourceful and has the making of a good MI5 officer. So Ben took Zaf's place on the team, serving with them in the field on many important operations. He helps prevent a Russian attack on London as well as stopping Al-Qaeda terrorism attacks. He goes undercover in the financial markets with Lucas North to stop a financier who is planning to ruin the British economy and helps protect a 16-year-old boy targeted for assassination by a rogue MI6 officer.`
When Harry was accused of being a FSB mole who was passing secrets from MI5 regarding "Operation Sugar Horse", Lucas North went to Russia to obtain proof of his innocence and expose the real mole. Simultaneously, Ben does some research in MI5's paper archive. In Russia, Lucas meets an asset, who tells Lucas to find a package in a bar. When Lucas finds the package, it shows a photo of Connie James, Section D's analyst, and Bernard Qualtrough, Harry's mentor, proving that that Connie is really the mole in MI5, not Harry. Lucas calls Ben and tells him this. Ben finds further evidence corroborating this in the paper archive.
Connie appears to ‘help’ Ben and sees him putting the evidence in his pocket. Before Ben can leave the archive to warn Ros and the rest of the team, Connie uses an underwire from her bra to slit Ben's throat, taking the evidence from his pocket as he dies in a puddle of his own blood. Ben's dead body is found later by the team and Connie is arrested by Ros as she tries to escape. On Harry's recommendation; the Home Secretary, Nicholas Blake, posthumously awards Ben a Distinguished Service Order; for all of his contributions to MI5 and Britain.
